Soul: defined

soul

/sol/

noun

The totality of an individuals thoughts, emotions, feelings or mindset. Separate from spirit, the condition of the soul at any given time reflects the experiences - both direct and indirect, that either encourages or discourages.

Soul Survivors: defined

Black men keeping the faith that their lives matter and that they have a divine purpose. These men represent multi-generations of black men who may have experienced challenges in life and may have even struggled finding value in the sight of God, but they became conscious about the power of their soul when connected to their spirit.

Soul Survivors: about

The Soul Survivors Series was born out of a concern that young black men would be overlooked amid the national conversation around policy and reform efforts to address injustice and inequality.  Don't Die Young is in agreement that reforming old and drafting new policies that support black lives is deeply important, but we need to take this a step further in specifically looking at the lives of young black men. There needs to be heighted awareness and compassion for the toll that racist policies and systemic failures have had on the souls of black men!  Generations of black men have been marginalized and traumatized and reform efforts must include accountability for healing black men, especially young black men who society views as "angry."

The Soul Survivors Series is a series of conversations with imperfect black men from different generations who are sharing their testimony of keeping their souls (thoughts, emotions, feelings, mindset) connected to their spirit. Don't Die Young embraces the belief that the spirit within is a gift from God and is therefore flawless. However, the soul is susceptible to a roller coaster ride of being encouraged or discouraged, optimistic or pessimistic. These testimonies will bear witness that keeping the faith about your value and divine purpose is possible in the midst of injustice and inequality.

Soul Survivors Series

Don't Die Young presents the Soul Survivor testimonies from strong black men who are sharing their stories of courage and overcoming. These Soul Survivors have shared their testimonies to speak with boys and young men of color to reveal that their lives truly matter and they were Born on Purpose...for a Purpose!

We would like to thank Center for Urban Families for their support in connecting with some of the strong and purpose-filled men who have shared their Soul Survivor testimonies.
